  • Drive Midnight Screening Initial Thoughts

I just came back from the midnight screening. The soundtrack is pretty awesome. I'm definitely picking up the physical copy once it comes out.

As for the movie, Drive is simply amazing. The trailers sell it as a typical action movie with a deal gone wrong but the performance by Ryan Gosling gives me a completely different vibe. I don't want to spoil anything for any of you that's interested in seeing this movie. He's incredible in this role and so is the rest of the cast.

The action sequences were intense. All those reviews I read about Drive having unexpected bursts of violence, they were right. Also, whenever the Driver did something badass, somebody would always clap. I found that kinda funny. The audience in my theater (a small crowd of 15 - 20 people) were quiet but reacted well to scenes that would naturally cause...a reaction. Whether it was something positive or completely insane, they would cringe, gasp, and even cheer. I thought that was a cool experience. I'm planning to watch it again on Friday. On a sidenote: a few people left after the first violent scene. I guess they didn't expect the movie to go that far. Even I found one of the scenes to be a bit too much. Maybe it was the anticipation of it about to happen. *Shudders*

I was very surprised on how good Drive was. I knew I was going to like it but I didn't know what I was getting into. It's a different kind of monster than what they advertised in the commercials.

Super Excited For Advanced Filmmaking Class

The Fall semester for 2011 is coming up next week and I'm really excited, mainly because of Advanced Filmmaking. I enjoy these classes because it gives me the opportunity to create my own short films. I always loved movies and I thought, why not try to make some of my own?

I'm already brainstorming some ideas for the final project already. Last week, our teacher emailed us to come up with three rough ideas before the first day of class. I'm carrying over one idea from my previous class. I'm sure I wrote about it in a previous entry a while back this year in Spring. Here's a sneak peek:

    Idea #1:
The one thing that I really want to create onscreen is a fantastic foot chase. I attempted one in "Taken To The Limit" but it fell short to my expectations. During the initial brainstorming for this idea, we came up with a plot that revolved around a man and his lemonade stand. Things are going well until a couple thugs stir up some trouble and take the money jar from the man.

    Idea #2:
This is an idea that has been carried over from my previous filmmaking class (Intermediate). It's about a clown who terrorizes a babysitter, which is based on a creepypasta. Creepypastas are these short little stories that only exist to scare readers. A few examples are:

    - The woman in the white dress by the side of the road
    - The girl with the red eye in the room
    - The dog who licks the boy's hand under the bed

    Idea #3:
I don't have a third idea yet but there's a few things floating in my head. I'm trying to stay away from the artsy type movies. I don't want to make anything that's supposed to be deep and meaningful in any way. I just want the audience to have a great time and be entertained. Don't expect any suicides or downer endings in any of my shorts. Then again, never say never.

  • Catching up

It's been a little more than a month since my last blog entry. I thought I should update on what's been going on in my life (for those that are curious).

I mentioned in my previous entry that I was planning on doing a bike ride to the beach. It DID happen...on the week after that entry was posted. It was quite exhausting and somewhat frustrating because one of the bikes that we were using was messed up. We had a total of four people (Jeff, Tony, Kevin, and I) and it took us about 5 hours to reach our destination. We left at around 8:00PM, stopped by at a Carl's Jr / Walmart near Carson, CA at about 12AM, and finally got to the beach near 1AM - 2AM. I'm not exactly sure.

Once we got there, everyone decided to not bike back and call up a friend to give us a ride home. Imagine how cramped it was in the car. Five guys and four bikes, all in one SUV.

There were a couple close calls during our trip to the beach. While trying to fix a problem with my string bag getting tangled onto the bike, a group of strangers who were at a distance broke some glass bottles. It seemed like they wanted to come up to us in order to steal the bikes. Another one took place at the beach. There were cops everywhere. People drove out of the parking lot at some restaurant and yelled at us. They called us names and threatened to shoot us. That's the bike ride.

As for the rest of the month, I went to my fourth straight year of the Vans Warped Tour on August 10 at Carson, California. This year was okay, I suppose. I only bought one item at the show but I also got a lot of free stuff as well. Check the pics below to see what they were:

The Devil Wears Prada windbreaker ($40):

    Free stuff:

The show cost me $100 in total:
    - $40 ticket
    - $20 parking
    - $40 TDWP windbreaker

I saw six bands at the Warped Tour:
    - Sum 41
    - The Devil Wears Prada
    - Asking Alexandria
    - The Ready Set
    - New Skool Kids
    - Shut Up And Deal

The lineup for this year wasn't my favorite. I only went because Sum 41 was playing. Let's hope next year will be a lot better.

    Editing Room Confessions

Have you ever had a good chat with someone and after it's over, you start to analyze the conversation and get all frustrated on what you should have said and things you forgot? Yeah, well I had one of those moments a couple days ago.

It was on a Thursday at school and I was waiting for somebody to open up the editing rooms (so I could edit my movie). While I waited, this older woman comes by and asks me if I was waiting for the room to open. I said yes. Seemed like she was too. A moment later, this younger woman, in her early 20s, comes up to the door and talks to the older woman. Apparently the older woman was waiting for her. The young female looks at me and asks if I'm here for the editing rooms. I say yes and she opens the door to let us in.

After about an hour, I was almost finished on my movie. I just had to burn the project onto a DVD so my film class could watch it that night (class was going to start in 5 minutes at this point). The young female comes into editing room A after dealing with the older woman earlier about her movie. She sits next to my computer to resume on her work.

The woman asks me if I needed help on anything and I say "No thanks I'm fine." She was like "Alright." I take a glance at her and begin to ask...

"So are you like a student? Are you taking the film classes?"

The woman says that she works at PCC. She's in the film department and helps out students in the editing rooms and classes. I'm like "Oh really?." She smiles and adds, "You thought I was a student asking if you needed help?" I said yes and she starts laughing on me being weirded out by some fellow classmate asking somebody if they needed help.

We started talking about film related things like avoiding the timebreak error when you're editing (which is the biggest annoyance to me) and sound problems when recording. After a bit, she tells me her name is Rebecca. I remember saying "Oh okay, cool." I think she even offered a handshake (not sure) but I didn't follow through. Maybe I should have introduced myself. Not to be a creep or anything, but Rebecca is one of my favorite female names. Whenever I hear that name, I always think about "The Town", which is a movie that came out in 2010. It was a movie that I really enjoyed so I guess it's a good thing if I associate Rebecca with that.

Once my DVD was finished, I thanked her for the advice and left the room. I hope I see her again. I thought she was really cool.
